Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. While many people occasionally struggle with focus or restlessness, ADHD describes symptoms that are persistent, begin in childhood (though sometimes recognized only in adulthood), and interfere meaningfully with daily functioning—at school, at work, or in relationships.

Symptoms & Experiences

ADHD presents differently from person to person, but the core features include:

Inattention

This may include:

  • Difficulty sustaining focus on tasks or conversations
  • Becoming easily distracted
  • Forgetfulness in daily activities
  • Trouble organizing tasks or managing time
  • Frequently losing items needed for work or school

Hyperactivity & Restlessness

Common experiences include:

  • Feeling “on the go” or unable to sit still
  • Fidgeting, tapping, or excessive movement
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Talking more than others or feeling driven to keep moving

Impulsivity

This can look like:

  • Interrupting others or finishing their sentences
  • Difficulty waiting one’s turn
  • Making decisions quickly without considering consequences

ADHD can affect emotional regulation as well, sometimes leading to frustration, overwhelm, or sensitivity to stress.

Why It Happens & Who’s Affected

ADHD is not caused by poor discipline or personal weakness. Research shows it arises from a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors. It tends to run in families and is linked to differences in how certain brain networks function, particularly those involved in attention and executive skills.

ADHD can affect people of all ages. While often identified in childhood, many adults discover they have lived with untreated ADHD for years, only recognizing the patterns later in life. With increasing awareness, more people—especially women and girls—are finally receiving accurate diagnoses.

Treatment & Hope

At Thuja Health Services, we emphasize that ADHD is highly manageable, and individuals can thrive with the right support. Evidence-based approaches include:

  • Behavioral strategies and coaching to build organizational skills and improve daily routines
  • Therapy, including cognitive-behavioural approaches, to address emotional challenges, stress, and self-esteem
  • Medication, when appropriate, to improve focus, impulse control, and regulation
  • Lifestyle supports such as sleep routines, structured planning systems, and habits that build consistency

Supportive care helps individuals understand their unique brain wiring, reduce shame, strengthen coping skills, and create systems that work for them—at school, at work, and at home.

If you or someone you care about is navigating the challenges of ADHD, know that support is available and effective. With compassionate guidance and personalized treatment, individuals can enhance their focus, confidence, and overall quality of life—unlocking strengths that go far beyond the diagnosis.
