Stress is a natural human response to pressure, change, or challenge. It emerges when we perceive that the demands placed on us exceed our ability to cope. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stress is “a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation.” World Health Organization The response can be helpful when it motivates us to act in a challenging situation — however, when stress is sustained or overwhelming, it may adversely affect physical and mental health. What Happens When We’re Stressed

When a stressor is perceived, the body triggers its fight-or-flight response: hormones like cortisol and adrenaline surge, heart rate and breathing increase, muscles tense, and attention becomes focused. CAMH+1 In small doses, this is adaptive. But prolonged stress leads to wear and tear on the body and mind, and may contribute to issues such as headaches, digestive problems, high blood pressure, sleep disturbance, mood changes, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. What Triggers Stress

Stressors can be many and varied: major life changes (job transition, moving house, loss), ongoing demands (work pressures, family responsibilities, financial worries), or even positive events (weddings, promotions) that place new expectations on us. EMRO Dashboards+1 The intensity of stress depends not only on the event itself, but on our perception of the event, our available coping resources, support systems, and past experiences. Managing and Overcoming Stress

At Thuja Health Services, we recognise that while you cannot always avoid stressors, you can learn ways to respond to them effectively. Evidence-based strategies include: building healthy routines (regular sleep, balanced diet, physical activity), practicing relaxation / mindfulness, setting realistic goals, talking to trusted others, and seeking professional support when stress interferes with your daily life. CDC+1 Importantly, you don’t have to navigate stress alone — our team provides a safe, supportive environment where you can explore what is contributing to your stress, develop personalised coping skills, and restore a greater sense of balance and resilience.
