Schizophrenia is a serious, long-term mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels and behaves. It is characterised by a difficulty distinguishing what is real from what is not, which can become deeply distressing and disruptive to everyday life. nimh.nih.gov+2World Health Organization+2

People with schizophrenia may experience symptoms such as hallucinations (for example hearing voices or seeing things others don’t), delusions (strong beliefs not grounded in reality), disordered thinking and speech, and changes in behaviour or emotional expression. Mayo Clinic+2SAMHSA+2 They can also encounter what are called “negative symptoms” – such as reduced motivation, difficulty showing emotion, and social withdrawal – which can severely impact day-to-day functioning. Mayo Clinic+1

How and Why It Happens

The exact cause of schizophrenia is not fully known. Instead, many factors appear to play a role — including genetics (a family history increases risk), brain chemistry and structure, environmental influences (such as prenatal issues or exposure to stress) and substance use. Encyclopedia Britannica+2WebMD+2 Onset typically occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood (men tending to be affected slightly earlier than women). nimh.nih.gov+1

Treatment & Hope

While there is currently no “cure” for schizophrenia, it is very much treatable — and many people can lead meaningful and fulfilling lives with the right support. World Health Organization Treatment often involves a combination of antipsychotic medications, psychological therapies (such as cognitive behavioural therapy), social support, rehabilitation and education for both the individual and their family. SAMHSA+1

Early intervention is particularly important: when symptoms are recognised and treated sooner, outcomes tend to be better, helping avoid longer or more severe episodes. Mayo Clinic+1

At Thuja Health Services, we are committed to offering compassionate, comprehensive care. We understand the complexity of schizophrenia — and we believe in working side by side with patients and their families to build safety, understanding, skills and hope.
