Panic Disorder is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by sudden, repeated episodes of intense fear or discomfort known as panic attacks. These episodes can occur without warning and are often accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, chest pain, sweating, trembling, dizziness, or a feeling of losing control. Many people describe panic attacks as feeling like a heart attack or a life-threatening emergency, even when no real danger is present.

At Thuja Health Services, we understand how frightening and isolating panic disorder can feel. Over time, the fear of having another attack can lead individuals to avoid certain situations, places, or activities, sometimes resulting in agoraphobia—the fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult. This avoidance can greatly limit one’s daily functioning, relationships, and quality of life.

The exact causes of panic disorder are not fully known, but several factors may contribute, including genetics, stress, changes in brain chemistry, or a history of trauma. It often begins in late adolescence or early adulthood, though it can develop at any age. Importantly, panic disorder is highly treatable, and effective support can help individuals regain control and confidence.

At Thuja Health Services, our approach to treating panic disorder is holistic and evidence-based. We combine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—which helps individuals identify and change unhelpful thought patterns—with relaxation training, breathing techniques, and mindfulness-based interventions to reduce the frequency and intensity of panic attacks. In some cases, medication may be used alongside therapy to help manage symptoms and promote stability.

Recovery from panic disorder involves understanding the triggers, learning to manage physical sensations, and rebuilding trust in your ability to cope. Our compassionate clinicians at Thuja Health Services provide a safe, supportive environment where you can explore your experiences and develop effective coping tools.

Panic disorder does not define who you are — with the right treatment and guidance, healing is possible. You can move beyond fear and rediscover calm, confidence, and a renewed sense of peace in daily life.
